Approximately 280 million pounds of glyphosate are used annually in the United States, according to the estimates of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This makes it one of the country’s most widely used herbicides.
There is no need to spray Roundup to potentially encounter glyphosate, an active ingredient in the herbicide. Not buying Roundup doesn’t mean you’re not exposed.
With Roundup being one of the most widely used herbicides in the US even today, people are still exposed to the chemical in relative proximity. This is especially true even for people who live near agricultural areas or work around treated land. More so for people who use herbicides directly.
Let’s look at how glyphosate can reach people who never directly applied Roundup, what current research shows about exposure, and what the latest U.S. data tell us.

What glyphosate does, and to what
Glyphosate has the ability to inhibit the activity of a certain enzyme found in the shikimate pathway. Plants require this pathway to produce amino acids; humans lack this pathway entirely.
One correction worth making up front. Glyphosate is not a selective herbicide. It kills everything that is green. The soybeans have been genetically modified to withstand the spray of glyphosate that the plantation survives.
That single fact explains why glyphosate volumes climbed the way they did once tolerant seed reached the market.
The science is contested and the regulatory record is unsettled
An agency of the World Health Organization, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans” in 2015. That is a hazard classification rather than a statement about any particular person’s risk, and it remains in place.
The American regulatory picture is messier than most articles admit. EPA’s 2020 interim registration review decision found no risks of concern to people. A federal appeals court vacated the human-health portion of that decision in June 2022 after finding the cancer analysis flawed, and EPA then withdrew all remaining portions of the interim decision in September 2022. Products stayed on the market throughout.
What did not survive is the tidy claim that the EPA has a current, standing finding on the cancer question. Which is roughly where the litigation sits, and why it has run as long as it has.

Drift and runoff move it off the property
Spray drift is the obvious pathway. Wind carries droplets past the field edge onto gardens, hedgerows, and yards that were never the target, which is why drift management language sits on the label in the first place.
Runoff is the second. Glyphosate binds tightly to soil particles. It moves into surface water mostly with eroded sediment rather than by leaching downward. It does break down.
ATSDR reports microbial degradation half-lives of 2 to 215 days in soils and 1.5 to 130 days in water, which is a wide range but not the permanence the word “contamination” tends to suggest.
Food is the pathway that reaches everyone
Diet is how people with no farm, no neighbor spraying, and no lawn service still register exposure. Glyphosate goes on soybeans and corn, and it is also used late in the season as a harvest aid on some grain crops, which is the use that has drawn petitions to tighten residue limits on oats.
None of that requires a purchase decision, which is the whole point of writing about it.
What the body actually does with it
Here is where a lot of exposure writing goes wrong, and the correction matters because it changes what a test result means.
Glyphosate does not build up in people. ATSDR’s toxicological profile reports that absorbed glyphosate does not accumulate in any particular organ or tissue, that less than one percent is metabolized, that roughly two-thirds of an oral dose leaves in the feces as unabsorbed parent compound, and that most of what is absorbed is excreted rapidly in urine unchanged. Reported elimination half-lives run in hours, not years.
So a positive urine test is not a record of a spraying from a decade ago. It is a signal of something recent, which is a more useful finding than a lifetime tally would be. The person who quit buying the product ten years ago is not still carrying that particular dose.
The exposure routes are real, and they run through air, water, and food without regard for property lines or shopping habits. The cancer question is open, with a WHO agency and a vacated American regulatory finding pointing in different directions. Neither of those two things needs the other to be overstated in order to matter.
